Mrs. Rosilyn McCleod Abel Washington

A memorial service will be held for Rosilyn Abel Washington of New York, New York will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, January 26, 2013, at Bethel United Methodist Church, 2903 Bethel Road, Bamberg, SC, where Rev. Thomas Sims is pastor.

Mrs. Rosilyn McCleod Abel Washington quietly entered into eternal rest on December 21, 2012. Born May 2, 1947 in Bamberg, SC, she was the daughter of the late Woodrow V. Abel, Sr. and Pauline B. Abel.  Rosilyn received her formative education in Bamberg, South Carolina and graduated from Richard Carroll High School in 1964.  While in high school she developed a passion for cooking and nutrition, which was inspired by her favorite teacher, Mrs. Louise Johnson.

Rosilyn matriculated and graduated from South Carolina State University in 1968 with a Bachelor's degree in Home Economics and completed an internship at Yale-New Haven Hospital in fulfillment of the degree requirements.  While at South Carolina State University, Rosilyn became a member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. She went on to further her education by earning her Master of Science and Dietetic Nutrition degree from Hunter College in New York City in 1983.

After moving to New York City, Rosilyn entered into holy matrimony to Eric Washington on June 17, 1972.  They shared 40 years together.  Rosilyn was employed for many years at Columbia-Presbyterian Hospital as a registered dietician. Her last hospital placement was at Gracie Square Hospital. Rosilyn worked in the field of dietetics for forty years until her retirement in June 2010.

For all who knew her, Rosilyn will be fondly remembered for her love of hats and the sands of South Carolina.  Rosilyn was also known for her “giving and sharing” spirit –she shared with all.  After her retirement, Rosilyn found that she desired more in life.  It was then that Rosilyn began an active fellowship with The Fort Washington Collegiate Church in New York and became a participant in some of the activities at her community center.

Rosilyn leaves to cherish her memory, her husband, Eric Washington, her daughter, Dr. Yolanda J. Abel (Baltimore, MD), her granddaughter, Akili N. Abel (Baltimore, MD); two sisters:  Ruth Williams (Stone Mountain, GA) and Patricia E. Grant (Bamberg, SC); two brothers:  Gilbert B. Abel (Bamberg, SC) and Kenneth J. Abel (Columbia, SC); and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws and friends.  Two brothers, Woodrow "George" Abel, Jr. and Solomon E. Abel, Sr. preceded her in death.

We extend our sincere sympathy to the family during this difficult time of loss.
